A message from Ken Cleary our Official Capehart man.
"Some thoughts about my time at Capehart 1962. I was the receiving clerk.
We made Capehart stereos with multiplex - FM and AM radios and sold them mostly to Macys; they sold them for about $179.00. There were also consoles with b/w Andrea TV (Capehart did not make the tv portion in the year 1962 for this model) we did make the amplifier and multiplex FM section.
The metal chassis were stamped out in an adjoining small building. We were a subcontractor for Sperry making azimuth indicators and wire harnesses for
the space program. We made amplifier and multiplex FM receivers for Harmon Kardon.
Cabinets came from Hickory cabinets North Carolina. Speakers came from Becker electronics. Tubes came from Holland. The building used to be Dynamic Electronics that made those antennas that sat on early TVs.
The company Capehart was owned by IT&T.
An amazing time in a different America.
PS the company was later sold to a Japanese Company called Electrophonic on Atlantic Ave, Woodhaven, Queens. I believe only the name remained at that time. Hope this can fill in some gaps in the history of the incomparable Capehart."
Here some more information from Ken….around the years 1961 and 1962 Ken worked for Capehart owned by ITT at that time much subcontract work for Sperry, Harmon Kardon.
Ken worked at 121 Street Richmond Hill, Queens.
And yes this fills in a little empty space in the once proud history of American made Electronics… Thank you Ken Cleary
